The Angra do Heroismo
Terceira - Azores

“Angra do Heroísmo” the first city of the Azores and seat of the diocese, possesses a large and valuable architectural patrimony. Thus the city has been recognised by UNESCO, which has included it in the world heritage list in 1983.

The title ''Heroísmo" was justly bestowed upon the city of Angra by the Queen D. Maria II in the nineteenth century in recognition of the bravery and sacrifice shown in the struggle that ended with the implantation of Liberalism in Portugal.

On January 1 1980 Angra’s heritage suffered greatly due to a violent earthquake that destroyed a large part of the old city. The initial structures of the buildings and monuments were preserved due to the diligent effort of the Azorean Government and other entities responsible for the restorations.
