Casa di Tia Custodia on the Canada dos Italianos -Altars, Terceira Island,

This is the ruin of the house of Tia Custodia. The only thing left standing were some window stones and parts of the eves of the old tile roof. One of the few remaining stone masons was hired to reset the stone facade after earthquake prevention measures were taken.
You can see the carpenter working on the doors and windows. We kept to the original design and materials.

The little window on the left is a tipical kitchen window that is opened as needed to provide air for the large wood oven.

Here is a rear view of the Tia Custodia house with the Tia Filipa house in the background.
You can see there is a large garage and even a rain water collection and storage tank under the level of the house.

Here is the north side of the Tia Custodia house as seen from the Tia Filipa house.

The fireplace is very large and can hold big logs. We have all the wood from our own grounds. It's great to have a roaring fire on those winter days when the wind is blowing off the Atlantic and you just want to stay snug. It is never cold enough to put in central heating.

We never are far away from our PowerBook G4's and both houses have broadband connections

Our first pizza going into a very hot wood oven.
All the houses on the island had or still have a wood oven in the style seen above. They are large enough inside to bake 15-20 loaves of bread at a time.

Preparing the table for a mexican meal.

A nice terrace with an awesome view.

A summer evening on the terrace.

A rainbow as seen from the terrace of the Tia Custodia house.

Sunset as seen from the terrace of the Tia Custodia house.

A view off the back terrace to the little garden house and a bit of the gardens.

Another view but with the island of Graciosa in the distance.

Both of the houses are now fully functional but there is never enough room for all the friends and family who visit us so we continue to aquire old junk heaps to bring back from the verge of death.

Just add some grass and flowers. . .

Here it is with our first house in the background.

Here is an aerial view of the two restored houses and some of the gardens.
There is a third red circle over on the right that shows the location of the next two houses to be restored.
