Our Casas on Terceira Island,
the Azores

After our second visit to the Island of Terceira we decided to buy a little home for ourselves. There were so many abandoned ruins after the earthquake on January 1, 1980 it was just a question of finding one that was for sale and that was to our liking. As all things eventually materialize for creative dreamers, we were quickly the happy owners of a heap of junk.

Now the villagers were secure in their assessment that we were two very strange beings and possibly even aliens. We were happy in our conviction that our endeavor would bear fruit and so put an end to the gossip about the crazies that have bought up that old ruin at the end of that isolated Canada with no name. (A canada is the Portuguese term for "street" or "way").

Originally our street was treated as part of the Canada da Ribeira dos Gatos. But now it has its own street name, Canada dos Italianos - The street of the Italians - due to the Italian license plate on our old Jeep and subsequently because a lot of Italian speaking friends and family came to visit.
